If you’re interested in a double feature of documentaries about artistic movements in New York, I definitely recommend Blank City and Brooklyn Boheme.
Anyone know where I can watch some No Wave cinema for free online? I think I might need a Spike Lee/Jim Jarmusch double feature next.
Oh, you know, just some lesbian moms on this year’s Mother’s Day cover of The New Yorker.
Love Chris Ware’s gorgeous Mother’s Day cover!

Watched Just Like Being There, the documentary about the Gig Poster scene on Netflix Instant today. I really enjoyed the flick, I thought it was well focused, really interesting, and it definitely made me want to try my hand at screen printing. Daniel Danger, one of the artists featured in the doco is FANTASTIC and I’m a little obsessed with his stuff now. I have to admit I was really hoping for some R. Black or Kozik in the movie, but neither of them appear (though Kozik is mentioned several times). If I ever get to go to SXSW I’m definitely going to have to hit Flatstock. It’s really cool how the gig poster scene is where music and visual arts mingle, feeding into one another.
Also, there’s a bit about the current Mondo film poster craze for the movie buffs (I’m not going to pretend that I don’t have Mondo poster for The Master as the background on my phone right now). Anyway, if you’re into art or indie rock, or both, it’s definitely worth your time to watch!
